PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) II will build a 400-metre dock especially for loading/unloading of vehicles in Kalibaru Terminal project to reduce the crowdedness at Tanjung Priok Car Terminal.
Bimo Widihatmoko, Unit Chief of Tanjung Priok Car Terminal (TPCT), said that, later, the added dock will specifically serve the shipment of export/import vehicles in Tanjung Priok Port.
“So, the design plan of Kalibaru Terminal project is also to set up a special loading/unloading dock for cars, in addition to liquid and containers,” he said, Wednesday (13/6).
Pelindo II has targeted first stage of Kalibaru Terminal project or New Priok with capacity of 1.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) for Rp 22.66 trillion be completed in 2014.
To this day, Widihatmoko stated that TPCT is already so crowded that the dock and the yard is not big enough to serve the loading/unloading of export/import vehicles and their spareparts.
He revealed that the current TPCT capacity is only 250,000 TEU a year, whereas the loading/unloading flow through the terminal in January-March 2012 has already reached 147,312 TEU.
“The capacity of TPCT that is only 250,000 units a year, we deem is not even to the cargo flow it serves,” he asserted.
The development of vehicle dock in Kalibaru Terminal, he revealed, is a long-term program in response of the stagnation threat at TPCT along with the rush volume of vehicle loading/unloading at the port.
Widihatmoko said that his office is also trying to find another solution by preparing a holding location moveover to TPS (temporary holding yard) partner still within the monitoring of Customs & Excise of Tanjung Priok Port.
“The moveover is the last option if the yard occupancy ratio is more than 85 percent and we can no longer maneuver in the yard,” he said.
Widihatmoko also revealed that the car terminal development program in Kalibaru will have a special dock for 400 m with a 40-ha holding yard.
If the car terminal in Kalibaru is ready, he added, the TPCT facility will be used as bulk terminal or domestic (interisland) car terminal.
During January-March 2012, TPCT recorded the realisation of loading/unloading of commercial vehicles, trucks, and heavy equipment for export/import shipment is 147,312 units or 46 percent increase compared to the same period of last year.
The vehicle loading/unloading flow comes from imports for 73,014 units with commercial vehicles 56,808 units, trucks 3373 units, heavy equipment and forklifts 4697 units, as well as spareparts 8136 units.
The export shipments are 74,298 units with commercial vehicles 71,870 units, trucks 50 units, heavy equipment and forklifts 656 units, as well as spareparts 1722 units.
The entire export shipments are served by 126 international vessels.
Previously, businesses in Tanjung Priok Port were worried of stagnation threat to the flow of vehicle loading/unloading at TPCT following the crowdedness of the holding yard.
Mulyono, Marketing Manager of PBM (loading/unloading company) of Bandar Krida Jasindo, said that the level of crowdedness at TPCT holding yard is very high, almost 85 percent.
According to him, businesses are pushing for short-term solution to handle the crowdedness of the holding yard at TPCT.
“If the solution is not found, it will cause stagnation at the terminal, because ships keep on coming to unload, while the holding yard is full,” he said.
The current capacity of the terminal for commercial vehicles, trucks, and heavy equipment is up to 7000 units. •
